Doing Nothing in Dubrovnik

Balkans Tour Day 2

Ah. Sleep. I’ve been traveling for what… a DAY and already I’m tired and in need of a sleep in? So far, I’m just giving myself more and more evidence to my position among the elderly.

Anyway, I slept in late in my amazing king sized bed. I took a long shower and went down to the market to get some stuff for lunch. First thing I notice about Croatians is cream cheese. Cream cheese is like, the national food here, and instantly, I’m in love. I buy like 6 tubs of the stuff, a loaf of bread and a giant bottle of Sprite and I’m set.

Everyone here speaks English. I’m staying in a tiny town outside Dubrovnik in Zaton Bay. Even in the local market grocery store which occupies a space less than probably 800 square feet, the woman behind the bread counter speaks English.

I got a ride into Dubrovnik from the hostel at about 2 PM and spent about 3 hours walking around old town sight seeing. Old town is absolutely beautiful with windy streets and hilly allies lined with cute restaurants and coffee shops. I walked over Pile Bridge and through the gate, looked at some maps of the damage that was done by shells during the most recent conflicts in former Yugoslavia. I spent some time watching people drink out of a giant fountain in the middle of town and walked down past an old church. I bought a new leather bracelet (because I don’t have enough of those already) got some gelato and wandered around the outside of old town.

And then, in the vein of, well, being an old maid, I decided I needed to relax and get a massage. Yes. That’s right. My two day long vacation had been so torturous on my body that I needed someone to help me relax. Wow. Anyway, I walked into this salon that looked promising and asked the guy if the did massages, which they did, he set me up with an appointment and when the appointment came, my masseuse walked me across the street to the Hilton to get my business done. Apparently, this salon was the “local” supplier of business to the Hilton, so I paid about half the price of the Hilton menu, but got the exact same service. Score!

After my amazing massage, I went to a café to have some beer and make some phone calls. I then went to dinner at a random restaurant with a cute old man behind the podium and great tables set up out on the street.

I got a ride back to the hostel and then…

… met some really hot guys and we went raving at this amazing nightclub until 5 AM.

Just kidding, I went to bed.
